Kaipara Harbour

The "Kaipara" is the largest natural harbour in the Southern Hemisphere. Around the turn of the last century it was the busiest harbour in New Zealand due to the Kauri Timber & Kauri gum export industry.

The Kaipara Bar or "Graveyard" is steeped in maritime shipwreck history. It can be an exciting and generous fishing spot when the weather is favourable. Fishing inside the harbour can be just as good, with a full range of resident fish species.

About Dream Rider

Dream Rider is a 48ft (14.6 metres) Don Senior design launch built by Skipper Ray Scott in 2003. She has been purpose built with comfort and speed in mind.

She is powered by a 600hp, V8 Deutz motor giving a cruising speed of 18-20 knots with a top-speed of 25 knots. This means a quicker trip and so more time for fishing!

Dream Rider has a marine survey to carry up to 20 people. If you are really serious about your fishing we recommend no more than 10 people.

Fish Species and Departure Times

The West Coast Snapper is the most sought after species in the Kaipara. The fish species most commonly caught in the Kaipara Harbour are:

  • Snapper
  • Trevally
  • Gurnard
  • Kahawai (Sea Trout)
  • Kingfish
  • Shark

Departure is dependant on the Kaipara tides. We always ensure you get a full day fishing (weather dependant) and can tailor the departure date to suit your fishing charter.
